power plant load gear

operational deflection shape analysis

power plants that use gas combustion turbines to generate electricity must reduce the high turbine speed down to the synchronized speed of a power generator. reduction gearboxes, known as "load gears" fulfill this function.

the operating deflection shape shown below, with a frequency of 85 hertz., shows the shaft of the combustion turbine (upper left) connected to the load gear and the shorter generator drive shaft (lower right). the misalignment between the load gear and the generator is obvious. this condition was caused by a lack of structural support on the generator side of the load gear.
